Gone, the days of resumes?
My favorite blogger, marketer and the “father of permission marketing” suggests in a post on his blog yesterday, “ I think if you’re remarkable, amazing or just plain spectacular, you probably shouldn’t have a resume at all.”
That’s the famous Seth Godin talking however. I doubt that in Atlantic Canada, a company is going to do that: hire someone without a resume. However, a great resume in addition to a blog probably will likely impress a future employer.
Matt Coddington had the right idea which landed him his dream job. He set up a blog and then wrote a letter to future employers highlighting the success of the blog with actual statistics. He wrote about scrapping your resume a while ago in this post:
I scrapped the resume and wrote a letter instead. In the letter I leveraged the success of my most recent site, Net Business Blog, to demonstrate my knowledge of the web industry. It worked. I got the job I wanted (as well as a ton of interviews with other companies).
I find that with internet trends, they often have to be modified to fit Atlantic Canada. Maybe just for the time being until we catch up to the trend in question.
Consider this: if you are a small business owner, do the same thing. If you are positioning yourself as an expert in your field and want to attain new business from being an expert then start a blog and have IT as part of your marketing arsenal.
Why not? It’s free. You have the knowledge. Now-a-days you HAVE to understand that your future clients and customers have access to (almost) all the information that you’re trying to give, however, if you can form a relationship with them and go the extra mile by sharing valuable information with them then they will think that you’re the expert, your product or service is remarkable and they’ll want to do business with you.
The small business owners that I know are passionate about what they do, and are invariably experts in they’re chosen field. Passionate and experts - two compelling reasons why I would want to read their blog (and why you should start one today).
