New recommended doses of vitamin D

“The current recommended daily allowance seems only to be able to be useful in prevention of rickets in childhood, and the latest information that we have is that levels, instead of 200 [IU], really need to be 2,000 [IU].

- from this article in the theglobeandmail.com yesterday.

Health Canada is probing further into the recommended doses of vitamin D and the research that indicates this seeming wonder vitamin is key to the prevention of illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and multiple sclerosis.

My good friend who is battling breast cancer right now was “unofficially” prescribed 6,000 iu’s of vitamin D (along with other vitamins, supplements and minerals) to complement her chemotherapy regime.

I take 2000iu of vitamin D plus what is in my multi-vitamins, approximately 800iu.
